The Karma Notes story and the people who turned a dream into reality...
The genesis of Karma Notes came in the spring of 2015, when the hysteria around performance ratings and bell curve was peaking. ‘Stop performance ratings’, ‘stop using the bell curve’ was the chant and it was growing with every passing day. It is still the chant, with many ‘experts’ adding fuel to the fire by writing trenchantly against performance ratings but without empirical evidence.
Digging deeper in trying to understand the problem, we found that ratings and the bell curve were not by themselves a problem; the problem instead lay instead in the complexity, subjectivity, and errors involved in the overall performance rating process. The process needed to be significantly simplified.
The next question that confronted us: are there solutions available to make the performance management process simpler, thereby helping the organization in building a feedback culture? Such solutions were conspicuously missing. Organisations, we believed, needed a simple and intuitive product that made feedback specific, contextual and timely. Thus was born Karma Notes, the One-Minute Feedback® tool.
Karma Notes is currently used by ~ 6000 users in 7 companies across 13 countries and is being piloted by some of the leading companies across the world. It has also been recognized by NHRD and People Matters as one of the best new products in India.
The National HRD Network is the National Apex body of professionals committed to promoting the HRD movement in the country and enhancing the capability of human resource professionals to compete globally and thereby creating value for society. Every year Bangalore Chapter of NHRD conduct an HR Showcase where there are awards for different categories. We were part of the HR Start Up Category where 42 companies nominated and we were selected as one of the Top 10 Start Ups.

Rajan, for more than 20 years, has been working to generate value for his critical stakeholders - Employees and Shareholders. He specialises in building organisations from scratch, taking the workforce from three digits to 15,000 plus. Passion for HR and acute business acumen inspired Rajan to form Salto Dee Fee Consulting in November, 2011.
His last corporate role was Director - Human Resources at Max New York Life Co. Ltd (MNYL). Under his leadership, MNYL won multiple global and Indian awards such as Gallup Great Work Place Award 2009, the Great Place to Work Award (2003, 2008, 2009). He has worked with leading corporations like Coca Cola (India), Eicher Consultancy Services, Eicher Tractors and Ballarpur Industries. He co-founded the Talent Management Institute and created and publishes Talent Quarterly magazine. He authored, with Miriam Ort, the Harvard Business Review Publishing best-seller One Page Talent Management. His prior corporate experience includes senior talent management roles at Bank of America and Avon Products.
His prior consulting experience includes starting and leading the Global Leadership Consulting practice at Hewitt Associates. He has a MBA from the Yale School of Management.
With over 15 years of retail experience, Garima heads business strategy, marketing, operations and IT for SDF Consulting. She has worked in various roles with retail organizations like Shoppers Stop, RPG Retail etc particularly for developing operations leadership, sales talent management and sales training. She is visiting faculty for marketing at various business schools like Birla Institute of Management Technology, Greater Noida, IMT, Ghaziabad, Ansal Institute of Technology, Gurgaon, Apeejay School of Management, ICFAI, Gurgaon and is currently co-authoring a book of luxury retail in India.
